Yaaasssss, queens. I did not expect to be this excited, but here we are. I've got a weekend of mochi donuts and Korean corn dogs ahead of me — and now I'm about to blow my whole paycheck preordering The Sixth Faction, the new Veronica Roth book returning to the world of Divergent. There's no ticker tape or parade, but honestly? There should be for this epic futuristic YA series spawning a whole new offshoot.

What is The Sixth Faction?

The Sixth Faction is the first book in a brand-new Divergent duology from #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth. Here's the twist that has me spiraling: it's not a sequel, not a prequel, not a spinoff, and not a new POV on a story we already know.

In Roth's own words: "This is an alternate universe in which Tris chooses a different faction than Dauntless."

So we're rewinding all the way back to the Choosing Ceremony and asking the question — who is Tris Prior without Dauntless? I don't know if I love it or hate it, and that ambiguity is exactly why I can't stop thinking about it.

  • Book two: February 2, 2027 — yes, it's a duology, so you get two full novels in this alternate timeline

If you're a preorder-the-second-it-drops kind of reader (guilty), the special editions tend to sell out fast, so don't sleep on it.

Why this is such a big deal

Say what you want about Divergent — this series set the stage for so many books to stand on its shoulders. It came out back in 2011, before "romantasy" was a word anyone used on the regular, before dystopian YA became the cultural juggernaut it did. Tris and Four helped build the runway that a decade of futuristic YA took off from.

Now Roth gets to recapture the joy of that world and, in her words, "fix" a few of the things longtime readers side-eyed about the original worldbuilding — all without touching the canon we already have. For fans who've been waiting years for more time in this world, The Sixth Faction is that rare chance to experience the story again for the first time, but different.

Should you read it?

If you loved (or love-to-hated) the original trilogy, this is an instant addition to your 2026 TBR. And if you've never picked up Divergent at all? An alternate-universe reboot is honestly a fun jumping-on point — you get the iconic setup with a fresh outcome.
